Abstract

This study investigates the role of ambassadors in conflict situations, with a specific focus on the Zimbabwean and Palestinian ambassadors in their efforts to ensure sustainable and durable peace in the context of the Gaza Strip. Employing a qualitative research methodology and a case study design, the research utilises both primary and secondary data sources. Primary data was collected through in-depth interviews, focus group discussions, and observational analysis, while secondary data was sourced from newspaper articles in particular The Herald, Newsday, Daily news and online newspapers and articles. The researcher also gathered some information from news articles including ZBC News, BBC, CNN and Al Jazeera. The first student was Kundai Paradza from University of Zimbabwe who is in her third year doing media studies. The second student is Wellington Makonese who a student of Masters in International Relations at Bindura University. The researcher had an opportunity to gather data from Palestine ambassador to Zimbabwe Dr Talma Almassri who shared his thoughts on what is taking place in Gaza. The findings reveal that the Israel-Palestine conflict is deeply entrenched and multifaceted; requiring sustained international efforts to address its root causes, including territorial disputes, economic inequality, and humanitarian crises. Zimbabwe’s historical solidarity with Palestine underscores its commitment to advocating for Palestinian self-determination. However, its influence is constrained by limited resources and geopolitical challenges. The study highlights the critical need for enhanced capacity building within diplomatic missions to improve their effectiveness in peace advocacy and humanitarian assistance. This includes adequate funding, specialized training, and logistical support for ambassadors and their teams. Additionally, the research underscores the importance of fostering regional and international cooperation by leveraging partnerships with organizations such as the African Union and the United Nations to amplify diplomatic efforts and build coalitions. The study concludes that achieving sustainable peace requires a holistic approach that integrates political, humanitarian, and developmental strategies, prioritizing the needs of vulnerable populations affected by the conflict. These insights contribute to the broader discourse on the role of ambassadors in conflict resolution and peace-building. Ambassador Legal Information Institute (2021) defines an ambassador as a senior or highest-ranking official assigned by his or her government to represent it in a foreign nation. Genocide is horrific and devastating crime that involves the intentional destruction of national, ethnic, racial or religious group with key characteristics being intent to destroy and systematic or organized and coordinated violence (Legal Information Institute, 2021). Economic devastation: this means severe infrastructure destruction, poverty, dependence on foreign aid.
