Sexual abuse remains a significant social problem in Zimbabwe, with many cases going unreported due to stigma, fear, cultural barriers, and limited access to reporting mechanisms. The termination of USAID funding in 2025 further weakened protection and reporting systems, particularly in rural communities like Ward 30 in Gokwe South District. This study explored alternatives to improve sexual abuse reporting in the post-USAID era by identifying existing reporting mechanisms, assessing their effectiveness, and examining sustainable community-based and low-cost alternatives. Guided by Empowerment Theory, the study found that while structures such as the Department of Social Development, Victim Friendly Units, Community-Based Child Protection Committees, traditional and religious leaders, and mobile phone-based reporting mechanisms continue to exist, their effectiveness is constrained by resource shortages and accessibility challenges. The study concludes that strengthening community participation, local leadership, and existing grassroots structures can enhance sexual abuse reporting and promote sustainable survivor protection in the absence of external donor support.
