Retail fraud remains a persistent challenge in Zimbabwe, threatening profitability and operational stability. Despite existing antifraud measures, the effectiveness of these strategies in curbing fraud remains uncertain. This research aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of antifraud measures in the Zimbabwean retail sector. The objectives were to identify the forms of fraud affecting the sector, determine the effectiveness of current antifraud measures, investigate the factors influencing their effectiveness, and provide actionable recommendations for improvement. A descriptive research design was adopted. The study employed various sampling technique purposive sampling, random sampling and convenience sampling in order to select participants from various retail businesses, using questionnaires, semi-structured interviews, and focus group discussions as primary research instruments. The findings revealed that employee theft, counterfeit products, and inventory manipulation are the most common forms of fraud. Most respondents rated surveillance systems, employee training, and fraud detection software as effective, while whistle blower hotline were perceived as less impactful. Key factors affecting effectiveness included employee training, technological integration, and management support. The study concluded that while antifraud measures are in place, their effectiveness varies significantly depending on implementation quality and resource availability. It is recommended that retail organizations invest in consistent employee training and adopt advanced fraud detection technologies to enhance fraud prevention efforts.
