Abstract
Cash flow management remains a critical determinant of organizational stability, especially for professional service firms operating in uncertain economic environments. While profitability indicates financial performance, organizations may still experience operational difficulties when cash inflows are not effectively managed against cash outflows. Actuarial firms face unique cash flow challenges due to several factors like delayed clients’ payments, fluctuating operational costs, and changes in regulatory requirements. This study sought to develop a framework for improving strategic cash flow management in actuarial firms, using ZAC Global Actuaries as a case study. The study was guided by the Liquidity preference theory, the Working Capital Management Theory, and the Cash Conversion Cycle Theory. The researcher adopted a mixed-methods approach for the study. Qualitative data were collected from twenty respondents through interviews, questionnaires, and document analysis. Quantitative data were collected and analyzed using descriptive statistics, while qualitative data from interview responses were analyzed through thematic analysis. Findings for Objective One revealed that ZAC Global Actuaries had established several cash flow management practices like cash budgeting, authorization controls, forecasting, and expense tracking. For Objective Two, the study identified key challenges affecting cash flow efficiency, including limited forecasting capabilities, delayed client payments, poor cash flow monitoring systems, as well as limited proactive liquidity planning. Findings for Objective Three established that existing practices were useful but required stronger integration of technology, improved forecasting approaches, and enhanced strategic oversight. Based on these findings, the study recommended an integrated intelligent cash flow management framework that incorporates strategic governance, artificial intelligence-driven forecasting, automated receivables management, contingency reserve funds, expense monitoring systems, as well as performance review mechanisms. The framework provides a proactive approach that enables actuarial firms to anticipate liquidity challenges, improve decision-making, and enhance long-term financial resilience. The study concludes that effective cash flow management requires a shift from traditional reactive approaches towards strategic, technology-enabled, and continuously monitored systems.
