Abstract

This study investigated the influence of product diversification on consumer preferences at Varun Beverages Zimbabwe, focusing on three key dimensions of diversification—product line extensions, product line depth, and product line width. The primary objective was to determine how these diversification strategies affect consumer satisfaction, loyalty, and perceived value in the competitive Zimbabwean beverage industry. Existing literature suggests that product variety, innovation, and market segmentation are central to shaping consumer behaviour, with theoretical models such as the Ansoff Matrix and Fischbein Model emphasising diversification as a strategic growth tool and consumer attitudes as being driven by product attributes. These insights provided the theoretical foundation for understanding the relationship between diversified product offerings and consumer decision-making. A quantitative research design was adopted, using a structured questionnaire administered to 217 respondents associated with Varun Beverages Zimbabwe’s Harare plant and depot. The study utilised descriptive statistics to summarise consumer perceptions and inferential techniques, including regression analysis, to assess the effect of product diversification strategies on consumer preference outcomes. This methodological approach enabled systematic measurement of behaviour, attitudes, and perceived value within the target population. The findings revealed that product diversification has a significant and positive impact on consumer preferences. Product line extensions increased satisfaction by offering flavour and variant options tailored to diverse consumer tastes. Product line depth strengthened engagement and loyalty by providing multiple alternatives within existing product categories. Product line width attracted new market segments and reinforced retention through broader product offerings such as energy drinks and flavoured water. Demographic analysis further indicated that younger consumers (ages 25–34) and middle-to-upper income groups are more responsive to diversified beverage products. The study concludes that product diversification is a strategic driver of consumer satisfaction, loyalty, and perceived value for Varun Beverages Zimbabwe. It highlights the importance of innovation, consumer-centric product development, and effective segmentation in achieving competitive advantage. These findings contribute to theoretical understanding of diversification within emerging markets and provide practical guidance for beverage companies seeking to enhance market performance through diversified product portfolios.
